The problem of periodontal diseases in elderly and senile age

Actuality. The relevance of the study is due high prevalence of periodontal diseases among elderly (55–74 years) and senile age (75–89 years) persons. Periodontal
disease is the most common cause of tooth loss, leading not only to a change in dental health, but also to deterioration in the quality of life of this population.
Aim: to study the integrated approach in the choice of treatment methods of periodontal diseases in elderly and senile patients by studying their risk factors.
Materials and Methods. This paper presents the survey of the dental status of 67 patients aged 55–79 years with usage of clinical and indexes assessment.
Results and Discussion. It was revealed that the incidence of dental caries and periodontal disease tissue among these patients is 100 %. The level of dental care
reaches 36.3 %, which is regarded as insufficient. Marked low motivation of oral care implement was revealed in elderly patients.
Conclusions. In order to eliminate the adverse effects of periodontal diseases and prolonged the remission period, it is need the prevention, earlier treatment, continuous
monitoring of the disease and prolonged supportive care during maintenance of the patients.
